Enter, stage right … … the Sorcerer’s Apprentice / Zauberlehrling. Introducing myself as the one, who proposes to bring you intricate bidding and declarer problems, defensive "puzzlements" and amusing anecdotes. The former two he will present as the "Hand of the Month", whenever it is his turn; the latter will appear, when you enter through the Gate of the Magic Castle. All these will come from his Grimoire. As you well know, a Grimoire is the wizard's / warlock's (and therefore his apprentice’s) compendium, containing the case-history of all the magic occurrences, that were successful and those that were not. You may ask me to justify my choice of this nom-de-plume. Well … … I am an engineer-scientist-historian. We professionals in any of these three disciplines are sorcerer’s apprentices: we can make things work, but we do not quite know why they do. My half-a-century at the bridge table, as a player, places me into the same category. *** *** There will be a very small, well-nigh nominal, prize awarded for guessing my identity.
