Margaret
Drew - Volunteer extraordinaire / by Carol Cutforth
Some people work for profit, some for glory and some because they are
wonderful giving people: volunteers. It is almost impossible to list what
Margaret Drew does for Unit 102. She cooks, helps with partnerships, plays
hostess, organizes clean-up crews, and last seen, was a caddy at the last
sectional, filling in until the scheduled help arrived .
Margaret grew up along the St. John river in the Maritimes, Canada. Her
father was a well known and innovative horticulturalist. As part of the
family's "squash taste panel" on Sundays (they were breeding buttercup
and
Hubbard squash), Margaret developed her own interest in food.
She graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a degree in Home
Economics and spent 17 years with the Ontario Dept. Of Agriculture supervising
staff developing programs for rural women and girls (4H Clubs). She organized
and conducted leadership forums and media marketing. Her own marketing skills
led her to Toronto real estate sales. "Educating first time buyers was
great
fun," Margaret commented.
Margaret met Doug Drew in Toronto and, in spite of his passion for bridge,
she married him 24 years ago. She says she continues to be passionate about not
playing bridge but thoroughly enjoys being part of the bridge scene. All this
led her to being a spectacular hostess for her husband when he was the ACBL
President in 1995.
Doug and Margaret love to travel, and they love sharing and visiting Doug's
three children and six grandchildren in various Canadian provinces. Unit 102 is
very fortunate that they chose Sarasota as their permanent address.
Margaret's dedication as a volunteer was acknowledged at our May sectional
where she was awarded Unit 102's First Special
Service Award. We congratulate and thank her for her immeasurable contributions
during the birth and early childhood of Unit 102.
