Dis-Connected

Trust chance

The field of battle is IMP KnockOut, but the event itself is of secondary interest, to quote the Bard: "The play is the thing ..". I am the dealer for this fateful hand, red-against-red as ...

A,6  |  K,Q,8,3  |  not-a-one  |  A,Q,10,9,8,5,4

Bidding, full of mysteries ...

Left hand opponent, the doubler visibly restrained herself from doubling the slam, her  Q (Russinow, as per her card) uncovers dummy as ... ... facing my hand (below)

K,7,5,2  |  10,7,6,  |  A,J,10  |  K,6,2

A,6  |  K,Q,8,3  |  none  |  A,Q,10,9,8,5,4

Eleven easy tricks, but where is the 12th? Knowing that the doubler must have the Ace of  -s helps not much. If you play hastily to the 1st trick, there is no recovery !!! The hand is "cold" as long as the Lady on your left has at least 4 -s, and as long as you do not play the Ace on the lead. Ruff the Q in your hand, play six rounds of -s, watching only the discards. This is what you see ...

Dummy: K,7  |  10,7  |  A,J  |  none

You: A,6  | K,Q,8,3  |  none  |  none

Now play A, next over to the K on Dummy. Lady on the left, who wisely abandoned her -s earlier, now discards. If she is keeping 2 -s and 2 -s,  lead a to your K.  The Lady has no choice, if she takes it with the Ace and returns a , your hand is high. If she leads a , you finesse and take the last three tricks. Alternately, if she lets your hold, another inplays her into a forced finesse, as before. If she keeps 3 -s, cash the A,dropping the K,cashing the J next and finally force a trick (your twelwth).

Why Dis-Connected? Observe, that at the ending you will have a winner (high card) both on Dummy and in your Hand, but no entry to either. Your opponent will give you the connection, unwilling as she may be.
